Edwards, Colo. • March 20, 2012 – Can Do MS has earned a four-star rating, the highest rating possible, five consecutive years for its ability to efficiently manage and grow its finances from nonprofit evaluator Charity Navigator. According to President and CEO of Charity Navigator, Ken Berger, only 14 percent of the charities that Charity Navigator rates have received at least two consecutive four-star evaluations, indicating that Can Do MS outperforms most other charities in America.
“We are honored to receive this 5th consecutive 4-star designation. Over 80 percent of the dollars we receive are committed to our programs and services,” said Heidi Heltzel, President and CEO of Can Do MS. “Our rating is a testament of Can Do MS’s commitment to fiscal responsibility. In this economic climate, it’s more important than ever for our donors to know their dollars are used efficiently for our mission of empowering people living with multiple sclerosis to transform and improve their quality of life. Charity Navigator’s recognition of our accomplishments verifies that we’re meeting the high standards we set for our operations.”
Charity Navigator is the nation’s largest and most-utilized, independent evaluator of nonprofit organizations. Each year Charity Navigator rates nearly 5,500 nonprofits based on operational efficiency and organizational capacity. These ratings show donors how charities use their dollars, and to what extent charities grow programs and services over time.
In 2011, Charity Navigator unveiled a more in-depth rating system refined to continue providing charitable givers easy access to valuable information. In operating under this new Accountability & Transparency two-dimensional rating system, Can Do MS obtained its second four star rating. Charity Navigator uses the Form 990, a public tax return that each organization files annually, to complete each of its financial evaluations. Donors rely on the star rating system to guide their dollars to fiscally-responsible charities.
